Making a multilingual website

If your business is international, this feature can prove to be essential for your business.

While machine translation such as Google Translate can be used by visitors, the translations are rarely perfect, and it usually requires manual activation on each page by the user.

By providing an official locale, you can customise much more than just the text content, you can customise images, colours - anything! Even provide a different logo for different regions, all without writing any code!

Most importantly, your website will be found in foreign search results - especially as titles, URLs and SEO meta data can be altered for each locale too!

On a user's first visit, their region and language will be automatically detected, but if that's incorrect - the user can switch their locale at any time using the locale selector in navigation bar or page footer.

Add locales

Visit the Settings page in the admin area /app/settings. Go to the Locales section. Here you can see and edit existing locales (if you have any).

Click the + icon to add a new locale, give it a label and choose a country flag. You should have 2 or more locales, usually the first one being you or your business's primary language.

A locale can either have a directory path specified, or a domain name, or a combination of both. Obviously for the domain locale to work, you'll need to have linked that domain name to your account.

You can re-arrange the order they'll appear in locale selectors - by clicking and dragging the tabs.

To delete a locale simply select a locale and then click the delete icon beside it. All pages that use this locale will remain - but they will become inaccessible because the locale was deleted. Please contact support if you decide to undo a locale deletion.

Create a page variation

Let's choose a webpage to create a variation for, perhaps your homepage? And open it in the page editor.

Switch to the document panel, click the locales input box and you'll probably see something like this:

By default pages are assigned an "All" locale. This is a "catch-all" locale, it simply means it will match any locale. It's perfectly fine to keep this set. You'd only want to change this if you wanted to restrict some pages to one or more locales.

Now let's make a new variation of this page, click New > New variation.

It will ask for a page title and one or more locales. Enter one of your newly added locales, one that's a different language to the page that already exists.

Click Create and the page will open for editing.

Edit the page

Now that the page variation is open, make sure you're editing the desktop layout, not tablet or mobile! How Do Web is desktop layout first - so for example if you were to translate the page while in tablet view - desktop layout would still be unaffected and would still be in the primary language!

Click blocks and edit them to suit the locale. Usually this will entail changing all of the text content to a different language.

Just like with inheriting from a parent page, blocks can't be deleted or re-arranged. However if needed you can hide a block, either by clicking the show/hide toggle, or in the properties panel go to Style > Display > Hidden.

Search engine optimisation (SEO)

Translating the page content for a different region will have already done wonders for your business's international appeal and search engine performance.

However there's more we can do.

Switch to the document panel. Don't edit parent, live, category, sub categories, hashtags - these properties affect all variations of a page.

However the rest of the properties are independent and can be overridden now.

For example the Title and URL slug

It's important that you set these because descriptive and keyword rich titles and URLs are very good for SEO.

For your English website you could have a page at "/blog/how-to-make-fried-eggs" and set the URL slug of your Russian version to "/ð▒ð╗ð¥ð│/ð║ð░ð║-ð┐ÐÇð©ð│ð¥Ðéð¥ð▓ð©ÐéÐî-ÐÅð©Ðçð¢ð©ÐåÐâ". This would significantly improve your chances of a Russian search engine showing your website in a user's search results.

Description and keywords should also be changed for each locale if you want optimum SEO.
